What's Available?
There are about fifteen Idea Management software applications available today. Several are offered by well-known companies, and some are less well-known. Which is the right one? Your first decision is which generation of software you need. First-generation is basically a webform and simple database. You can probably do that yourself, and many have. Usually these outgrow their usefulness. Second-generation was developed around 2000 and was created for cost savings and process improvement. It is effective at collecting a large volume of ideas and has automatic routing. Third-generation idea management was developed specifically for innovation, both incremental and breakthrough. Currently, only one company offers it. One of the second generation or third generation software packages will probably be right for you.
